Due 2/29/16
1. Define the following vocabulary in complete sentences:
Homologous, diploid, haploid, meiosis, tetrad, crossing-over, zygote.
2. Describe the main results of meiosis. How many cells are produced? Are the cells diploid or haploid? Why does this process occur? Give an example of a diploid and haploid cell
in the human body.
3. The resulting cells produced by meiosis are called
gametes. What are the male and female
gametes produced by humans? Other human
somatic (body) cells contain 2n = 46 chromosomes. How many chromosomes are found in the sex
cells (gametes)?
4. Summarize the
main differences (at least THREE) between mitosis and meiosis.
5. Sexual reproduction has evolved because it increases
genetic diversity. IDENTIFY and EXPLAIN
at least THREE different ways that meiosis increases genetic diversity among
offspring.

- Read Chapter 11.2-11.3 and answer the following questions in complete sentences:
- Explain Mendel’s Experiments. In your description select a specific trait that he tested and discuss how he set up his experiment and the results he observed.
- Identify at least THREE reasons why peas were an effective organism to use for his experiments.
- What are alleles? Differentiate dominant and recessive alleles.
- An F1 plant that is homozygous for shortness is crossed with a heterozygous F1 plant. What is the probability that a seed from the cross will produce a tall plant? Use a Punnett square to explain your answer and to compare the probable genetic variations in the F2 plants. Show your work!
- Describe Mendel’s law of independent assortment and law of segregation.
